What Is Pilates?
The benefits of pilates...
The original concept was developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1920s for fitness, dance and rehabilitation. In the last 20 years, Physiotherapists, with the aid of research have modified and adapted the exercise system to use for injury rehabilitation.
Pilates is considered a total body and mind work out. It is a specific type of exercise which encourages controlled and precise movements, specifically designed to train deep postural muscles, giving you a strong core and optimal structural alignment. It is a non-impact, balanced system that will challenge everyone.
Clinical Pilates Has Applications For:
- Musculoskeletal, sports and spinal
- Orthopaedics
- Women’s health (Including pre & post natal)
- Occupational Health- Static postures at work such as computer use

How do I begin a Pilates program with a Physiotherapist?
It is important to undergo an initial assessment, which will cover your medical history, x-rays and scans, and test your current level of core stability. After the initial consultation, an individual exercise program is tailored to your needs.
When to use Pilates
At Inner Focus, our rehabilitation is on quality of movement and central control. Often after injury, the local muscles shut down, or the wrong muscles become overactive to compensate. The sequence of muscle activation may also be altered. We aim to retrain the nervous system to use the correct muscles patterns at the precise time to ensure protection of those important structures, such as the spine and pelvis.
